Autumn in Osaka
The seasons of life seem to come around very quickly. Here in Japan, it is a beautiful time of year and, in fact, my favourite season. The colours of the trees are changing rapidly, and each day brings something new to see. Back in Australia, the sun is beginning to warm the land, and many people head to the coast to escape the heat. Wherever you are, I hope you are enjoying the changing of the seasons and finding beauty in them as they unfold.

The second-hand shop teapot is a modest, everyday object, yet it became an immediate choice for this drawing. Colour has always been central to my selection of motifs—whether in a grand mannerist seascape, the Japanese countryside, a pedestrian street in rural Nishi-ku, Kobe, or the persistent hues of an old utensil. The scale or status of the subject matters less than the colours that first draw my attention. Colour initiates the praxis.
This teapot presented a particular intensity of local colour under afternoon light. But once the motif enters the process of drawing, perception is no longer passive looking. What I see is immediately shaped by memory, earlier studio encounters, and the marks already forming on the paper. I call this interval delay.
